Drawing for Life

Join us for Drawing for Life – a creative drawing experience in a space where all abilities are welcomed.

Each event sees leading artists and performers curate poses, subjects and performances for a distinctive life drawing experience.

Drawing for Life with Irene Messia

In March we invite you into the ancient world of Pompeii as we present the unique opportunity to draw from a life model within the Inside Pompeii: Origins of a European Way of Life exhibition.

We will be guided by the expertise of local artist Irene Messia. An accomplished figurative painter and sculptor, Messia’s extensive training in Italy includes exploration into Pompeiian artistic traditions and mythologies.

Over the course of the session, participants will experiment with rendering mythological scenes, classical drapery, and still life arrangements inspired by frescoes from the ancient Roman city.

Please note, other than bottled water, food and beverages are not allowed in the Gallery space. We invite you to join us either before or after the session at The Exhibitionist Bar for refreshments. The Exhibitionist Bar is open 10am – 10pm, Level 5, HOTA Gallery.

#Artist Bio

Irene Messia was born and trained in Rome, Italy. She studied at the Liceo Artistico Mario Mafai while simultaneously completing a three-year painting program at the Scuola d’Arte San Giacomo. After graduating, she continued her artistic education at several institutions, including the Art Academy of Rome, and in 2014 earned a degree in Art History from the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy at Università degli Studi Roma Tre.

Messia later moved to Australia and in 2017 relocated to London, where she worked on various art commissions. Returning to Australia in 2019, she collaborated with local artists and participated in major sculpture group exhibitions including the Swell Sculpture Festival for three consecutive years. For over a decade she has taught drawing and painting courses on the Gold Coast.

Since 2023 Messia has been based in Rome focussing primarily on marble sculpture. She has exhibited in two group shows at Galleria del Bufalo and continues to develop her artistic practice while maintaining professional collaborations in Australia.
