Warhol, Haring, and Basquiat walk into a restaurant

Find out more about the iconic group photograph in Pop Masters.

If you’ve stopped by Pop Masters: Art from the Mugrabi Collection, New York, you would’ve seen this iconic photograph at the end of the exhibition.

It features much of New York’s art world in the mid-80s, including Pop Masters superstars Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, and Jean-Michel Basquiat.

The photo was taken by Michael Halsband, who photographed Warhol and Basquiat on several occasions, at Mr Chow, a Chinese fine dining restaurant in New York City.

The restaurant was a popular haunt for artists and became an immersive fusion of art and culinary innovation. Mr Chow’s often welcomed a glamorous crowd of artists for exhibition opening celebrations and birthday parties (including Warhol’s 58th).

Over the years, owner Michael Chow has been depicted by artists like Warhol and Basquiat and has become a celebrity of the art world in his own right.
