Music for Other Worlds

Two Australian artists working at the heights of creativity come together for an improvised live musical experience. Music for Other Worlds unites virtuoso pianist Paul Grabowsky AO with mesmerising images of the Gold Coast by photo-artist Alex Frayne. But there is an exquisite twist as Grabowsky sees the large-scale projected images for the first time along with the audience. Individual movements unfold as the improvisation gives full voice to the pictures in real-time; authentic, unfiltered and unrehearsed. Each image acts as a departure point, or 'window of possibility' for Grabowsky to convey personal interpretations of Frayne’s photographic brilliance.

ALEX FRAYNE

Alex Frayne has been involved in film and images from his earliest school days. Beginning with an 8mm camera in hand he has continued his love affair with visual media ever since. His stills photography work has earned acclaim and his work is held in galleries including the National Portrait Gallery (two images in the Permanent Collection).

He shoots mainly analogue film formats, including 6x6cm, 6x9cm and 35mm formats.

Simon Caterson, for The Australian, writes: ""the book confirms that Frayne deserves to be thought of alongside Ansel Adams and the other great landscape photographers.' (Landscapes of South Australia, Wakefield Press, 2020).

He has four art books published by Wakefield Press with the most recent Distance and Desire released in 2024.

PAUL GRABOWSKY AO

Paul Grabowsky AO is a Melbourne-based pianist, composer, arranger, conductor – and is one Australia’s most distinguished artists. During the late 1970’s he became prominent in the music scene in Melbourne, working in various jazz, theatre and cabaret projects. He lived and worked in Europe and the US from 1980-85, during which time he performed with many jazz luminaries including Art Farmer and Johnny Griffin. He returned to Australia in 1986 and established a reputation as one of Australia’s leading jazz musicians with such bands as his own trio and sextet, the Wizards of Oz and as musical director for singer Vince Jones. He has won seven ARIA awards (most recently in 2019 for his recording ‘Tryst’ with singer Kate Ceberano), two Helpmann awards, several APRA and Bell Awards and a Deadly award. He was the Sydney Myer Performing Artist of the Year in 2000, and received the Melbourne Prize for Music in 2007. He was the 2010 Australian National University H.C.Coombs Fellow. He is currently a Professor at Monash University, and director of the Monash University Academy of Performing Arts and the Monash Art Ensemble. In 2014 he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for services to music and arts administration.
