HOTA Collects Showcase: Surge

HOTA Collects Showcase: Surge

A curated selection of ceramics from the HOTA Collection is now on display in the Showcase cabinet of Level 5, opening onto The Exhibitionist Bar.

After a powerful meteorological event – like a tropical cyclone – the natural and built landscape is left changed. You may find your neighbourhood looking different than before; sand dunes reconstructed, animals misplaced, unusual detritus litters the shoreline.

Drawn from the HOTA Collection, this selection of ceramics appears as remnants from below, which have surfaced after extreme coastal change. Each artwork is handcrafted by a different artist, using sand, clay and other organic materials. Familiar objects appear fossilised in layers of sediment, while others shimmer in the light as if being pulled straight from the ocean. What stories might these objects hold if we imagine them as relics?
