Everybody NOW! explore What Moves you? in a brand-new online film series

We love that HOTA Home Company, Everybody NOW! are all about moving communities and celebrating local stories.

Their team of joy generating artists have a distinctive knack for bringing together people from all walks of life.

This new project is no different, as local legends, dance, skate, strum and slam their way through a five-part docuseries as part of Everybody NOW’s inaugural Storyteller-In-Residence project.

We recently hosted a special film screening and live performance event to celebrate the films and the extraordinary artists and creative community members who feature in them. The good news is - you can still experience the films online and learn more about these locals below.

Everybody NOW! Executive Director Kate Baggerson says: ‘We believe that everyone has a story to tell. Our Storyteller-In-Residence project allows us to lean in and listen more deeply and share those stories with the world.’

Created by Film Maker, Musician and long-term Everybody NOW! collaborator, Tnee Dyer, the Storyteller-In-Residence Series seeks to discover the transcendental power of movement and unlock the mysteries of connection to our bodies, ourselves and each other.

Armed with the provocation “What Moves You?” Tnee spent six months gathering unique perspectives to this question, spanning across generations, backgrounds, and creative influences.

Episode One stars 16-year-old rockstar-in-the-making Josh Murphy from Currumbin, who reflects on the time he got to play with David Gleeson from The Screaming Jets, as part of HOTA’s Those Who Rock event.

Josh Murphy says: ‘I remember letting the music take over me and just absolutely going for it. I’ve never experienced anything like it in my life. It just kind of happened in the moment.’

We also meet Margo Knox who in her seventies, is well qualified to dish up a series of truth bombs. In her short film; she says:

‘In my younger years I use to think that enlightenment came through gurus and inspirational quotes, but as you age you learn that it has to come from within. You have to do the work. We’re not here to be perfect, but you do want life to be joyful for yourself. Finding that - that’s what moves me.’

Street dancer Jazi Othman speaks the joy of everyday movement, roller skater Carla Baxter has some words of wisdom about giving yourself permission to fail and learn; and drummer Dee Bradbery shares her perspective about the energic connection she seeks with audiences from behind the drum kit.

Kate Baggerson says: ‘Tnee has captured everyday lives of these extraordinary folks in such a beautiful way. The films have left us with our hearts full, minds alive and bodies in motion as we ponder how we move through the world; how we embrace movement in our lives; and how we move closer to each other.  We hope people also find inspiration in these bite-sized great local stories.’

You can see the films playing in HOTA Central (near the Candy Bar) the week of 26 Jun or watch them all on YouTube
