2021 Christmas Commission features new art from Nicholas Tossmann

HOTA, Home of the Arts, celebrates and supports Gold Coast based artists by commissioning a seasonal artwork in recognition of the role contemporary art practice plays in everyday life. In its fifth year, HOTA presents the Christmas Commission 2021 by local artist Nicholas Tossmann.

The festive spirit is in full swing as we shift into summer and the yuletide tradition of HOTA’s Christmas Commission. The highly anticipated annual commission invites a local artist to bring the seasonal spirit to the HOTA Precinct in an ambitious artwork. For the fifth year, HOTA is pleased to present the Christmas Commission 2021 by local artist Nicholas Tossmann.

The experience of Christmas is different for many people. It can be the exciting anticipation of growing wish lists, moments spent with family and friends and a time to reflect on belief and meaning. For the 2021 commission, a new outdoor artwork by Nicholas Tossmann has combined unassuming language and upscaled text to invite you to ponder the meaning of Christmas through a thoughtful text-based artwork. In a series of six installations, Tossmann’s work Moments provokes contemplation as a sequence of festive philosophical flashes that span from the HOTA Gallery across the wider Precinct to the Green Bridge.

In an exciting opportunity to create your own festive journey, and to take a step back from the hustle and bustle of the busy season, plan a stroll through HOTA and take in Moments by Nicholas Tossmann.

#About Nicholas Tossmann

Nicholas Tossmann’s practice investigates his experience as a conceptual artist and philosophical search of self and purpose. Tossmann explores these ideas methodically by analysing and questioning his art practice, which involves the process of researching, making and critically reflecting. Text, diagrams and mapping are key elements to his art making and his work invites a contemplation of the expansive potential of art to question our purpose.

Tossmann is a recent graduate from QUT with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual Art) and upon graduating was awarded the EyeLine magazine Prize. He has recently completed a 4-month residency with The Walls, and a 3-month residency with Level Up, Coolangatta. Tossmann recently exhibited in group exhibitions at Metro Arts and Outer Space. His first solo exhibition was in October 2021, at Wreckers Artspace, Woolloongabba.
