ArtLab with Mark du Potiers – Robot Rizz!

ArtLab workshops respond to HOTA Gallery exhibitions, providing kids with the opportunity to explore ideas, materials and techniques and create unique artworks of their own.

Are robots taking over HOTA?! Join guest artist Mark du Potiers for a sustainable robot-making workshop where kids and adults build colourful cardboard robots together!

RX78-2 currently showing in This Moment: Highlights from the White Rabbit Collection of Chinese Contemporary Art, is not your typical robot. The artist Kung Wen Yi 鞏文宜 has used traditional ceramic techniques and colouring known as sancai 三彩, associated with small-scale pottery vessels and figurines, to portray the larger than life, high tech robot.

In this workshop, we’ll explore the possibilities of a range of unlikely art materials to represent a multitude of possible robotic functionalities and fulfil our sci-fi fantasies!

Recommended for ages 6 – 12 years. Children must be accompanied by an adult or carer and cannot be left unsupervised at any time. Thank you for your understanding.

Mark du Potiers

Sculptor Mark du Potiers mashes bright colour with unusual materials to make fantastic art! Mark creates artworks about his mixed Australian, Hong Konger, and Chinese background – and his adventures in finding connection, meaning, and belonging amongst the things that make us all different and unique. Mark’s work includes installation, costume-making, performance, and writing. He has exhibited and been published across Australia, North America, India, and Hong Kong. Mark recently completed a scholarship with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, contributing articles about understanding neurodiversity and looking after your mental health.
