Martina Clarke
May
Martina Clarke is a figurative oil painter and installation artist residing in the Gold Coast Hinterland. Through large detailed oil paintings, Clarke unfolds layers of complex emotions embedded in deep rainforest scenes. Subtle use of surrealism and spiritual motifs carry themes of entropy, dissonance and belonging. Exploring universal sensations of sunlight, contemplation and slowness, paintings of people bathed in warm filtered rainforest light, resting with the land, communing with plants, quietly yet vibrant enough to be drawn into the scene. Some familiarity can always be found in these gentle actions of resting in nature, encouraging you to find a moment of presence in your day. In a rapidly changing world, creating space for moments of centeredness and quietude is one more way art acts as a balm for the human experience. Clarke completed her Bachelor of Fine Art at RMIT University (Melbourne) in 2020 and has since participated in several exhibitions and prizes around Australia. Most notably winning both Emerging Artist award (2021) and Peoples Choice Award (2022) at Brisbane Portrait Prize. Participating in the Environmental Art and Design Prize, Manly Gallery (2022) and the World Science Festival at Queensland Museum (2021). Lastly Martina regularly showcases her work at local art prizes and has produced two solo shows in Brisbane.
